Philosophy of Choice

Alright, so with this one there’s a caveat.

And the caveat is . . . if you lack awareness, you lack the ability to make choices.

Here’s the thing, we all have to make choices every single day. But, making a choice and being aware of the choice we make are two different things.

Here’s the idea, a choice is predicated off both your logical mind and your emotional state. The two are always at odds with each other even though the emotional mind is stronger as it has an inexhaustible will. The logical mind, on the other hand, does not.

The thing about choice is that most people make them based off how they feel versus what needs to get done. If people made choices based on what needs to get done, they would be more successful in life.

Here’s how: choose between going to a job you don’t want to go to versus kicking back in the crib and watching your favorite Netflix series. . .

Pretty obvious right?

Now, choose between making money versus being broke.

Again, obvious right?

Now, choose between making money so you can watch Netflix versus watching Netflix and make no money which would cause you to lose Netflix because, as you know, shit cost money and life ain’t free.

Now, it gets a bit difficult.

The difference with these choices and the other two was that this one forced you to be aware of the choice you were making and the consequences of each one. This awareness comes from a limited number of choices as opposed to all the choice in the world. As you know, when confronted with too many choices, the brain shuts down due to an inability to process so much in so little time.

The thing with choice is that we’re constantly forced to make split-second decisions without being aware of how that decision would affect us down the line. Living this way, people get into this sort of autopilot where they’re making decisions unconsciously and when you ask them how they got to their current state they can’t tell you, or they’d have to think incredibly hard because each choice was made mostly by the subconscious mind.

So, what’s the moral of this armchair philosophy? How is it practical to everyday life?

Simple, limit the amount of choices you make per day and increase your awareness of each decision you make. This way, you’ll be more successful in your day to day life. Things will go much smoother and a lot of the chaos you normally swim in will fall away, leading to a more stress-free life.

Now, I’m not a professional philosopher nor do I have a PhD on the subject. However, there are some things in my life I do that allow me to be relatively stress-free and, me being an introspective and philosophical thinker, just wanted to share a bit with you. So, hope you take something from this.
